Afterschool

The sector has a standing agenda and meets within the Santa Clara County After School Collaborative (SCCASC). SCCASC is a network of community based organizations (CBOs), school district and site staff, local government, and concerned citizens who work, or have a stake in, public and privately funded after school programs.  In addition to SCCASC’s collective mission to ensure youth, grades K-12, receive high quality, safe and comprehensive programming during the critical hours after school—from 3-6 pm, the sector supports SCCASC in promoting healthy nutrition and physical activity.  www.sccasc.org

School Health (Formerly Education Sector)

Healthy Silicon Valley's School Health Sector has a current focus of Coordinated School Health (CSH). The CSH Model serves as a valuable model for children to get more physical activity and nutrition education throughout the school day. Within the sector, members are looking to promote the model for county-wide use throughout the county's 32 school districts and hopefully get an adoption of the model at the county level.

Sector members range from working directly at school sites, working for the County Office of Education, and working with local non-profit and community organizations.

Media and Marketing

Have you ever implemented a communications strategy? That is the goal of the Media and Marketing sector. The strategy is rooted in 12 themed months, nine of which come from the popular Fit for Learning Resource Guide developed by the Santa Clara County Office of Education. Each theme carries a different nutrition and/or physical activity related message. Each month is highlighted with the promotion of HSV member organizations, exciting programs, and inviting activities.

The sector is currently comprised of various community organizations, with the addition of organizations directly involved in the above-mentioned communications strategy.

Nutrition and Physical Activity

The Nutrition and Physical Activity sector is currently working to promote nutrition and physical activity programming at community centers within the City of San Jose. To that end, the sector has been coordinating and hosting "Fruit and Veggie Fun Walks" at the Olinder Neighborhood Center once a month since the beginning of the 2008. The events include a one-mile fun walk, sharing of nutrition and physical activity resources across Santa Clara County, quarterly health screenings, and free produce delivered the following week to residents who attend the weekend event. Partnering with the City of San Jose, the sector is looking to expand their events into other neighborhoods across the city in the near future.

Sector members come from varied professions, including retail, non-profit and community organizations focusing on nutrition, physical activity, general health, and city/county departments.
