Beginning in 2010 Healthy Silicon Valley transitioned away from its sector approach to a more focused, efficient programmatic approach. Approved by the Steering Committee in early December of 2009, the programs were shared with the general collaborative in late January and program committees were formed. In total there are four programs, ranging from grassroots, direct service activities to policy-level strategies. Each of the four programs are rooted in increasing the health knowledge of Silicon Valley residents, decreasing health illiteracy, sharing practical health education, and creating and promoting policies that promote a healthy environment.

Healthy Silicon Valley's Programs

Community Messaging
Healthy Silicon Valley's Community Messaging Program utilizes the power of digital media through the creative and innovative work of Silicon Valley youth. As part of the program youth will work with media professionals and students from local universities as well as Healthy Silicon Valley collaborative partners and supporters to create digital narratives to educate the general public on preventable diseases and their impact on the community.

Speakers Series
The heart of our Speakers Series program is about information-sharing, health education, prevention, and closing the gap of health illiteracy. Health illiteracy, which is defined as the inability to read, understand, and act on health information, is an issue facing 47% of adults and costing the US between $106-$236 billion annually. Utilizing physicians, experts in the field, disease survivors, and others, the program will be showcased
at community centers throughout Silicon Valley and is directed to the general community who need and desire a greater understanding about their health and health issues.

Policy Development

The Policy Development program will look to do three things: celebrate and promote the successes of nutrition and physical activity policies and the organizations implementing them in Silicon Valley, coordinate a policy training event where professionals can learn how to take an idea and turn it into a policy, and lastly engage in the work around a state soda fee.

General Plan
Healthy Silicon Valley 's General Plan Committee is largely focused on follow-up with elected officials and other city staffers that were present at the 11/06/09 Peninsula Breakfast that Healthy Silicon Valley organized at City Hall in Mountain View. These events and activities are currently funded through Kaiser Permanente and expect to be completed by July of 2010.
